This song overall reflects Holden's view on life throughout the novel, before he has finally matured.
Let's dance in style, lets dance for a while
Heaven can wait we're only watching the skies
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst
Are you going to drop the bomb or not?
Let us die young or let us live forever
We don't have the power but we never say never
Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip
The music's for the sad men
Can you imagine when this race is won
Turn our golden faces into the sun
Praising our leaders we're getting in tune
The music's played by the madman
Forever young, i want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever forever
Forever young, i want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever
Forever young Some are like water, some are like the heat
Some are a melody and some are the beat
Sooner or later they all will be gone
Why don't they stay young
It's so hard to get old without a cause
I don't want to perish like a fading horse
Youth is like diamonds in the sun
And diamonds are forever
So many adventures couldn't happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams are swinging out of the blue
We let them come true
Forever young, i want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever forever
Forever young, i want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever forever forever
Forever young, i want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever forever
Forever young, i want to be forever.
When it says, "Let's dance in style, lets dance for a while" it correlates to Holden's constant desire to dance with someone who is a great dancer. It can also be connected to the scene where Holden is dancing in the bar with the three girls. "Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip" represents how by the end of the novel, Holden sees life as "a short trip" meaning that you are only an innocent little child for so long, and you eventually grow up to be a phony. When it says, "Forever young, I want to be forever young" this correlates to Holden's, along with many other teens, fear of growing up and desire to stay young forever. This also connects to how Holden feels that every child should be forever young, and should never have to lose their innocence and become an adult. He doesn't want other children going through the confusion and loneliness that he has gone through, hence wanting to be the catcher in the rye.
