I've been roaming around always lookin down at all I see.
Painted faces fill the places I can't reach.
You know that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody
Someone like you
And all you know and how you speak
Countless lovers undercover of the street
You know that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody
Someone like you
Off in the night while you live it up I'm off to sleep
Waging wars to shake the poet and the beat
I hope it's gonna make you notice
I hope it's gonna make you notice
Someone like me
Someone like me
Someone like me
Somebody
(Oh, let it out)
Someone like you
Somebody
Someone like you
Somebody
Someone like you
Somebody
I've been roaming around always lookin down at all I see.
Although
this song may be about a lover looking for another, let's look at it at a more
basic level. This song tells the story of a guy who is looking for someone to connect with. He needs a companion. "I've been roaming around always lookin down at all I see, Painted faces fill the places I can't reach" can be connected to show how Holden is roaming around in the city, simply looking for someone who will accept him for what he is. We see his desire to connect from the fact that he calls people randomly, talks with prostitutes, and tries to converse with three older women. But then all he sees are phonies or "painted faces." This ultimately leads him to become dejected and depressed. The overall mood of this song is loneliness, which is similar to the mood that we see in The Catcher in the Rye. Also when it says, "You know that I could use somebody, Someone like you" it can be connected to something Holden might say towards the end of the book. He might be saying how he needs someone like Phoebe, or someone there to support him through his struggles.
