3. Boulevard of Broken Dreams- Green day

This song captures the overall gloomy tone that Holden sets throughout the novel, as well as the depressing setting that takes place in Holden's teen years.

I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's only me to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of broken dreams
When the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a-

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ahhh-Ah
Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah

I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line of the edge
And where I walk alone

Read between the lines of what's
F***ed up and everything's all right
Check my vital signs to know I'm still alive
And I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a-

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I'll walk alone...

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah
Ahhh-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah
I walk alone
I walk a-

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of broken dreams
When the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk a-

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I'll walk alone

Green Day's song deals with one of the most prevalent themes and issues that Holden faces during his time in New York: loneliness. In the first stanza, it says, "I walk a lonely road, The only one that I have ever known, Don't know where it goes, But it's only me to me and I walk alone" and this quote really depicts the overall emotions of Holden in the book. It displays Holden's loneliness in the novel, how he is an outcast, and also his failure to connect with anyone else. When it says, "When the city sleeps, And I'm the only one and I walk alone" it can connect to the scene in the book where Holden takes his midnight strolls in the city and calls people up for no reason whatsoever just to talk to someone, but once again fails to connect with another. Overall, the song and the book share the same theme of loneliness and need for a companion.
